Admin Biographical HistoryOlwen Smith (fl.1962-2012) grew up in the diocese of Leicester, and as a teenager had a strong vocation to serve as an Anglican minister. After leaving school she read theology at the University of Birmingham, followed by a postgraduate diploma in pastoral studies. In 1968 Olwen Smith took up her first post as a parish worker at St Nicholas' Church, Lincoln, working there while her husband John trained for the ministry at Lincoln Theological College. The couple then moved to Grimsby, where Olwen worked for Industrial Mission, and then to Wolverhampton, where she joined the Black Country Industrial Mission team. In 1987 she was ordained Deacon, and subsequently became one of the first women to be ordained priest in Apr 1994. In 1998 she became a Prebendary of Lichfield Cathedral.

DescriptionCorrespondence and papers collected by Olwen Smith during and prior to her involvement with the Movement for the Ordination of Women (MOW), including newsletters, circulars, copy minutes and press cuttings. Also includes publications from the 1960s (predating MOW) about opportunities available to women who felt called to work in the church. This archive provides a personal perspective on the Movement.
